I Thought You Were a Monster

I like to think of myself as the Clark Griswold of Halloween.  There’s no such thing as too many Halloween decorations.  And my house, which was built in 1903, is the perfect backdrop for ghosts, ghouls and skeletons.

So, the other day, after putting my garden to bed, I was sitting on the porch surrounded by my spooky friends, drinking a glass of water and enjoying the late October sun.  It must be noted that I was dressed exactly as I usually am… black shirt, blue jeans and boots.  And as I was relaxing, a delivery van pulled up in front.  A young woman exited the van and approached the house with a package.

I stood up to receive the package and when I did, the young woman screamed and took a step back.  Then she said, “Oh!  I thought you were a monster.”  We both laughed and she took some pictures of the decorations before leaving.

This encounter reminded me of what Leonard Cohen once said, “You start off irresistible. And, then you become resistible. And then you become transparent – not exactly invisible but as if you are seen through old plastic. Then you actually do become invisible. And then — and this is the most amazing transformation — you become repulsive. But that’s not the end of the story. After repulsive then you become cute again.”

I don’t think anyone would have ever considered me irresistible and I am not anticipating becoming cute again. I’m comfortable with the aging process and everything that comes with it. Happy Halloween everybody.

Take care.
